Manuscript Description
Bibliography
The keyword search box provides a quick and easy way to search for manuscripts. Use keyword search as you would search Google™, Yahoo!™, or any other internet search engine.
Keyword
Searching manuscript descriptions allows you to search across the manuscripts in the library. As such, it is useful for looking for manuscripts and restricting your search results by language, provenance, and other criteria. To use manuscript description search, fill in at least one field on the search screen. Fill in more fields to narrow the results.
Manuscript Number
Enter the number of the manuscript as given in the M. R. James Catalogue, for example: "50". To locate the M. R. James number that corresponds to Stanley or T. James designations, use the "Browse by Manuscript Number" feature.  
Manuscript Title
Enter one or more keywords to search by manuscript title, for example "sacramento" or "sacramento altaris." Note that authors are often named in the manuscript titles, so it is also possible to search for all or part of an author's name, such as "Augustine," "Nicholas Love," or "Love."  
Text Title
Enter one or more keywords to search the titles of individual texts within the manuscripts, for example: "Brut" or "Ancrene Wisse." Note that authors are often named in these titles, so it is also possible to search for all or part of an author's name, such as "Wyclif," or "Gregory the Great."  
Provenance
To search the "Provenance" field of the manuscript descriptions, enter the name of a town, city, institution or individual owner, or other keyword. For example, enter "Norwich," "St. Augustine's," or "Easton." Note that names may be given as part of provenance-related inscriptions, and frequently appear in Latin form (i.e., Iohannis or Johannes rather than John).  
Incipit
Enter one or more keywords to search by incipit, for example: "Ego" or "Ego Ninnius." For manuscripts that include multiple texts, this will search the incipit of each text.  
Decoration
Enter one or more keywords to search the "Decoration" field of the manuscript descriptions, such as "initial," "map," or "gold."  
Language
Use the drop-down menu to search for works in a particular language. All manuscripts containing at least one text in the selected language will be displayed.
