AB or Simply A? Reconsidering the Case for a Standard

Notes:
CCCC MS 402 Discusses the AB language of Early Middle English texts. The term derives from the sigla given to two early thirteenth-century mss, Bodleian, Bodley 34 (siglum A) and CCCC MS 402 (siglum B). It has been considered as a taught standard to scribes, but this view is questioned. This language seems to be that of a single scribe rather than a standard. The extent of its influence is reviewed. Variant spellings between A and B are listed, pp. 157-8 et passim
