Provenance
From Worcester: see below.
The book is copiously glossed in Latin throughout, and chiefly by the same curious tremulous hand which has annotated MS 12 and MS 178. This must mean that in cent. xii the three books MS 12, MS 178 and MS 198 were in the same monastery. That the monastery in question was Worcester admits of no doubt. See on MS 12. The same hand appears in MSS. at Oxford which are clearly from Worcester.
Additions
On f. iv a list (cent. xvi) of contents, headed: Quartus liber. On f. iir an old list (xi) of contents. The original hand goes from i. Sermo in natale domini to xxxi. Non. mai. inuentio s. crucis. The hand of the principal annotator (xii?) continues the list to no. lx. sancti andree. At top of f. 1r in large red letters (xvi) is: Aelfricus abbas transtulit.
Decoration
There is a frontispiece (f. ir), a drawing in outline with shading in red and faint purple. The style is good, but not the best Anglo-Saxon. The picture represents six apostles, nimbed and richly draped, in two rows of three. In the upper row the first on L. has a book, and his legs are crossed, the second (Andrew) holds a short sceptre terminating in a cross set in a circle, the third (Peter) beardless holds book and key and turns to R. In the lower row the first has pen and book, the second with crossed legs addresses the third who holds up a pair of tablets: all three are beardless.

Abstract/Contents

Summary
CCCC MS 198 is an important collection of Old English homilies, mostly by Ælfric of Eynsham OSB (c. 950-c. 1010). It was written in the first half of the eleventh century and received a number of additions in the second half. It also contains a neumed office for St Guthlac added towards the end of the eleventh century. The manuscript may have been written at Worcester; although the textual associations of the main body are south-eastern, the additions appear from their spellings to be from the west of England, and in the thirteenth century it was annotated by the scribe known as the 'Worcester Tremulous Hand'. It was Parker's fourth volume of homilies in his numeration system.
